2020 High School Graduation – Saturday May 23 – details coming

We would like to officially announce we will be hosting a formal High School Graduation as scheduled on Saturday May 23. By the end of next week you will hear what the plan is to complete this event. Some details we can tell you:

  • The formal ceremony will adhere to any health department guidelines that will be in place at that time, several options will be developed so we can adjust to restrictions in place

  • It will be streamed live for all relatives, friends, and community members that would like to view it

We are so proud of what our seniors have accomplished during their time at Hancock Public Schools. They have served as mentors and role models to our younger students. They have contributed to our community in so many ways, from sending birthday/holiday cards to the elderly to cleaning up parks and road sides, to raising funds for the Salvation Army to serve those in need in our community.

They each possess a unique set of talents that they will go on to share with and benefit others in the world after graduation. This is their time to reflect on what they have accomplished, celebrate this moment, and spread their wings as they fly on to their next challenge. We are committed to ensuring a safe and appropriate send-off celebration. Stay tuned for more details coming soon.

Free & Reduced Lunch Application – a chance to help feed students in our community

You will be receiving applications in the mail for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch program. We are asking that each family fill this out if they have not. Here is some information about the program:

  • All information is kept confidential

  • If you qualify for it, you dontt have to utilize it

  • Why should you fill it out?

    • The more community families that qualify for it, the larger the meal benefits are for all families in the district

    • Higher numbers of free & reduced lunch qualifying students actually increase our odds of success for grants we write to gain funds to increase our school programming options, each of which benefit your and all students

Please consider filling out this application, it will help all our students, ensuring each student will never sit in a classroom hungry, even in the most difficult of times for a family and community.

Teacher Appreciation Week – May 4 – 8…Next Week

I wanted to let you all know that it is National Teacher Appreciation Week next week. There are not enough words to describe my admiration for our educational team which includes: teachers, para-pros, aids, food service, custodians, bus, drivers, administrative assistants, coaches, and principals. These adults come into contact with your students each day. They challenge them to grow, support them when they are feeling down, celebrate their successes no matter how big or small. They are their friends, their mentors, and their role models.

How we educate our students, feed them, and connect with them weekly has been totally upended due to the COVID-19 virus crisis. To adapt to the circumstances our education team has had to be creative and innovative, quickly learning new technologies while learning totally new ways to engage students without all the tools they have filled their classrooms to support effective engaged learning. For many, their classrooms have become their homes using the internet, or a phone. I am sure each parent can empathize with what they are going through, and you are experiencing similar challenges of rapid change.

I truly can't express how proud I am of them for how they are continuing to grow under these ever changing circumstances. I ask that if you were thinking of a time to show your appreciation for these talented professionals, please consider showing it to them this week. A letter to the school addressed to them, an email, or even a smile when you see them walking, each will be appreciated. If you drop these signs of appreciation off at the schools, we will get it to them.

Parents have always had a role as "teacher" for your kids, you should also share in Teacher Appreciation Week recognition. You have taken on an expanded role as your student's teacher, which our education team is greatly appreciative of. Our mission is to creatively find ways to increase our support of your efforts, even though it may be from a distance.

I leave you with this quote from Benjamin Franklin, "Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn."

May all of you enjoy our spring weather this weekend!

Steve
