School Closure / COVID-19 Updates

March 25, 2020

Hancock Public Schools Parents and Guardians,

As many of you know, our Governor placed a "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Executive Order yesterday afternoon. Many are interested to know what this means to our school operations, especially in regards to if we are considered essential workforce. Our Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators is working closely with Governor Whitmer's office and came out with this clarifying statement:

"While the order extends school closures until at least April 13, 2020, educators supporting public and private K-12 schools for purposes of facilitating distance learning or performing other essential functions, including food services, are considered essential workforce."

So we continue to operate to serve our community. Some updates:

  • Student breakfast/lunch pickup for this week will take place tomorrow, Wednesday March 24, from 11 am to 1 pm at Barkell Elementary. This is curbside pickup to comply with social distancing requirements. Information on how to sign your student up of the program can be found on the attached document.

  • Our activity packet delivery will be moved from next Monday, March 30 to Wednesday, April 1. It will be part of the student lunch pickup at Barkell Elementary, curbside pick up to ensure compliance with social distancing requirements.

  • We will offer weekly book checkout and chrome book check out from the Hancock District Library. See attached document for directions. Weekly pickups will occur at Barkell Elementary during the student breakfast/lunch pickup process. Again, this process will ensure social distancing protocols are being correctly followed.

A note that March 25 is National Medal of Honor Day. The Medal of Honor was created in 1861, it is the highest military honor. It is also Tolkien Reading Day, created in 2003 by the Tolkien Society to encourage others to read Tolkien's works like The Lord of the Rings.

Our staff continues to clean and sterilize our facilities, in preparation and hope for your students return to our buildings. Words cannot convey how proud I am of our teachers and staff in response to this crisis.

Thank you for your continued support as we navigate these unprecedented challenging times. We will continue to pass on factual information as it is passed on to us.

Be well.
